Anthropic API & Claude Developer Platform
Anthropic rents out the Claude models through the Messages API, a stateless but very explicit contract built for long-running agents: budgeted thinking you can see, typed tool results, deliberate prompt-cache breakpoints, and the Model Context Protocol (MCP) — the open tool-plugging standard Anthropic created and the industry adopted.
01.The Problem: Chatbots Are Easy, Hours-Long Agents Are Hard
A chatbot answers one question and you are done. Easy.
A coding agent is different. It reads your repository, edits twenty files, runs the tests, reads the failures, fixes them, and keeps going — for hours.
That kind of workload breaks naive setups:
- The model must re-see a huge pile of context (system prompt, repo files, tool definitions) on almost every turn.
- It must use tools reliably — thousands of tool calls in a row without drifting.
- It must notice its own mistakes and self-correct mid-task.
Anthropic designed Claude around exactly this problem. Its brand is agentic reliability: the Claude 4.x models were explicitly tuned for sustained, multi-hour tool-use sessions and sat atop the SWE-bench and terminal-bench style leaderboards through 2025. The developer platform is shaped around that one idea: tool results, thinking traces, and citations are all first-class message content types, not hacks.
So the question this topic answers: what does an API look like when it is built for an AI that works rather than just chats?
