Feature Selection
A packed suitcase with 40 clothes for a 3-day trip makes you slower, not readier. Feature engineering (Topic 36) adds columns; selection subtracts the useless ones — via filters (cheap statistics), wrappers (try-subsets) and embedded methods (Lasso/tree importances) — to cut noise, overfitting and cost.
01.The Problem: More Features Can Mean a Worse Model
Topic 36 told you to engineer features. Now the opposite advice:
More features are not always better.
Picture packing a suitcase for a 3-day trip. Forty outfits does not make you readier — it makes the bag heavy, and you waste time deciding what to wear.
Columns behave like clothes:
- Irrelevant columns (a user's shoe size in a loan model) add pure noise the model can chase.
- Redundant columns (income and income-in-rupees) waste model capacity on the same information twice.
- And as dimensionality grows relative to your number of samples, models overfit and generalization degrades — the curse of dimensionality: with many features, data points become sparse and the distances between them turn nearly uniform, so "nearest neighbor" stops meaning anything (Topic 32's distance models lose their footing).
Pruning to the features that actually carry signal gives models that are simpler, faster to train, cheaper to maintain in production — and often more accurate.
Three Families of Feature Selection
Three Families of Feature Selection
Filters score features independently, wrappers search subsets by model performance, and embedded methods select during training via regularization or importance.
