Key takeawayCore Concept Summary

MCP is a JSON-RPC client/server standard that lets any AI app consume tools, data, and prompt templates through one universal plug — like USB-C for models. This topic covers the roles, the three primitives, transports, lifecycle, and the security problems it creates.

01.The Problem: Every Plug Needs Its Own Adapter

You built a great tool for AI assistants: say, a Postgres connector. Now you want it to work with Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, Cursor, Gemini, and every IDE agent on the market.

Here is the ugly part: before November 2024, none of them spoke the same language. Each assistant had its own way to declare a tool, its own auth flow, its own argument format. Your one tool needed 50 custom integrations. Meanwhile every assistant was hand-crafting integrations for every tool it wanted.

Count it up:

  • N apps/hosts (models, IDEs, chat clients)
  • M services/tools (databases, ticket systems, file systems)
  • bespoke adapters needed: M × N

50 hosts × 40 tools = 2000 one-off integrations, each with its own bugs, auth, and deprecations. This is a classic interoperability mess — the same problem every generation of computers solves by standardizing the plug instead of the devices.

So the question becomes

Insight

What if there was one standard way for a program to say "I offer these tools and this data" — and every AI app knew how to listen?

Anthropic open-sourced that answer in November 2024: the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Within months OpenAI (Agents SDK, March 2025), Google DeepMind for Gemini (April 2025), and Microsoft across Windows/Copilot Studio all adopted it. By 2026 MCP is the default integration surface for agentic tooling — commonly described as USB-C for AI or "HTTP-for-agents." It collapses M×N into M+N.
