ElevenLabs: The Voice Layer for AI Products
ElevenLabs turned speech into a product layer: text-to-speech that sounds human and emotional (~75 ms first-audio on its Flash/Turbo tiers for realtime bots), instant voice cloning with consent checks, a Voice Library marketplace, Scribe speech-to-text, Dubbing Studio, and an Agents runtime — which is why it became the default voice inside many AI products.
01.The Problem: AI Learned to Write Before It Learned to Speak
By 2023, chatbots could compose poetry.
Try to make one say the poetry out loud, though, and the spell broke:
- the built-in OS voices sounded like a 1990s GPS,
- the "nice" options were research models you had to train, host, and babysit yourself,
- real voice actors were slow, expensive, and do not answer at 3 a.m.
So product builders asked
Can we rent a recording studio over the internet — any voice, any language, milliseconds of latency, one API key?
That gap — between text that reads well and speech that sounds human — is what TTS (text-to-speech) models exist to close. Generative TTS means a neural model synthesizes the audio waveform itself, instead of stitching together pre-recorded fragments (the old "concatenative" systems that sounded robotic precisely because they were literal glue).
ElevenLabs, launched in 2023, is the company that made expressive speech a commodity API call.
