LangChain: Standard Interfaces and the 1.0 Agent Era
LangChain is the most-deployed LLM application framework: provider-agnostic interfaces for models, tools, and retrieval, and — since the October 2025 1.0 release — a lean agent abstraction (create_agent) built on LangGraph runtime with structured outputs and middleware.
01.The Problem: Every AI Vendor Speaks a Slightly Different Dialect
Suppose you build a support assistant on OpenAI. It works. Then Anthropic releases a cheaper, better model, and your boss asks: "can we switch?"
Now the painful part. Every provider has:
- different API names and settings
- different ways to represent a chat message
- different ways to say "the model wants to call a tool"
- different ways to stream tokens back
- different formats for "reasoning" blocks
Your app code is tangled in all of that. Switching providers means rewriting dozens of call sites. And providers will change: pricing flips quality rankings every few months.
So the question becomes
Is there a way to write my app once, and treat the model behind it like a light bulb I can unscrew and swap?
That "way" is a framework with standard interfaces. And the most-deployed one in the world is LangChain.

LangChain 1.0: Interfaces over a LangGraph agent loop
1.0 slimmed LangChain to chat models, messages, tools, structured output, and middleware — while the agent loop itself runs on the LangGraph engine, sharing integrations across both packages.
