DBSCAN
DBSCAN groups points that live in crowded neighborhoods, connected by chains of dense areas — so clusters can have any shape, the number of clusters is something the data tells you, and lonely leftover points get an honest "outlier" label instead of a forced home.
01.The Problem: Groups That Are Not Round Blobs
Picture a city's bike-rental data: every trip start plotted as a dot along the river, plus a ring of dots around each central station.
You run k-means (topic 65: assign points to nearest center, move centers to means). It slices the river corridor and the station rings with straight walls — inventing fake boundaries in the middle of continuous structure.
What if the groups are long arcs, rings, or interlocking crescents — shapes no "center" describes?
K-means needs a center because it measures distance to a centroid. But lots of real clusters have no meaningful center — they have density. Dots huddle in crowded regions; crowded regions touch other crowded regions; lonely regions separate them.
So the question flips:
Instead of "which center is this point nearest?", ask "does this point live in a crowded neighborhood — and is that neighborhood linked to others by dense streets?"
That is DBSCAN — Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (Ester, Kriegel, Sander & Xu, KDD 1996). Clustering as connectivity, not as distance-to-a-point.

Density classification happens first; clusters then fall out as connected components of core points, with border points attached and leftovers declared noise.
