The Reality of 30-Day Preparation

Thirty days is the sweet spot for experienced engineers. You already write production code; what you need is the structured framework to articulate distributed trade-offs cleanly on a whiteboard in 45 minutes.

Here is how to allocate your 4 weeks:

Week 1: Foundations & Capacity Physics

  • Back-of-the-envelope calculations: QPS, storage growth, network bandwidth, cache sizing.
  • Networking primitives: TCP vs UDP, HTTP/2, HTTP/3, WebSockets, gRPC.
  • Caching topologies: Write-through, write-back, write-around, cache invalidation, cache stampede mitigations.
  • Interactive Lab: Test cache eviction algorithms and latency impact using our in-browser simulator.

Week 2: Storage Engines & Partitioning

  • Relational vs NoSQL: When to choose ACID relational versus partitioned document/wide-column stores.
  • Storage internals: LSM-Trees (RocksDB, Cassandra) vs B+ Trees (Postgres, MySQL).
  • Database sharding: Consistent hashing, virtual nodes, shard rebalancing strategies.
  • Replication: Single-leader, multi-leader, and leaderless (Dynamo-style quorums: W + R > N).

Week 3: Consensus, Streaming & Event-Driven Systems

  • Distributed consensus: Raft leader election, log replication, and split-brain resolution.
  • Message queues: Kafka partitions, consumer groups, exactly-once semantics vs at-least-once.
  • Distributed transactions: 2-Phase Commit (2PC) vs Saga pattern (orchestration vs choreography).
  • Rate limiters: Token bucket, leaky bucket, sliding window counter algorithms.

Week 4: Production Blueprints & Full Whiteboard Drills

  • Day 22–24: Design a Social Feed (Twitter / Instagram) — Fan-out on write vs fan-out on read.
  • Day 25–26: Design a Distributed Key-Value Store (Dynamo / Cassandra).
  • Day 27–28: Design a Real-Time Chat Platform (Slack / Discord) — Gateway connections, presence, message storage.
  • Day 29–30: Full mock interviews in our Discord #mock-matchmaking room!
