Karpathy's Zero to Hero vs AI & ML: Beginner to Pro
Andrej Karpathy's free YouTube series (plus micrograd, makemore and nanoGPT on GitHub) showing an expert build neural networks, backpropagation, and GPT token-by-token, line-by-line from scratch in Python.
Free resources are excellent in AI/ML and we say so on every page here. These deep dives credit what each platform genuinely does well, where it structurally stops, and which of us you should pay — if anyone.
How we write these: no invented statistics, no fake testimonials, and real credit where the other product wins. Competitor facts here reflect their public offerings as of Oct 2026 — verify current features and pricing on their site before buying. AI & ML: Beginner to Pro prices are shown live on /ai-ml/pricing, so we never quote stale numbers.
What it is

What Karpathy's Zero to Hero does well
- The best explanation of deep-learning internals that exists anywhere. This is not hype; it is the standard recommendation of senior ML engineers.
- Building micrograd-style autograd yourself demystifies backprop permanently.
- You watch a genuine expert think, including the false starts — irreplaceable modeling instincts.
- The repos (nanoGPT etc.) are the cleanest study code in the ecosystem.
- Free, ad-free on the learning path, no account needed.
Where it falls short (fairly)
- It is videos + code, not a course: no exercises, no quizzes, no feedback, no certificates.
- Deliberately narrow: deep learning core. Classical ML, data engineering, retrieval systems, MLOps, eval, alignment — out of scope.
- No sequencing for a beginner *into* ML; the assumed Python/NumPy comfort is itself a prerequisite.
- Nothing interview-oriented — Karpathy himself would be the first to say it is not prep.
Karpathy's Zero to Hero vs AI & ML: Beginner to Pro: dimension by dimension
Competitor column is our best public understanding as of Oct 2026 — confirm on their site.
| Dimension | AI & ML: Beginner to Pro | Karpathy's Zero to Hero |
|---|---|---|
| DL-internals depthHonest call: Karpathy teaches the core mechanics better than anyone, including us. | Written topics with diagrams and code explaining the same mechanics | Unmatched from-scratch live-coding of backprop, GPT, tokenizers |
| BreadthHis scope is a feature of the series, not a bug — but it is 1 of our 17 phases. | 320 topics: math, classical ML, DL, NLP/LLMs, retrieval, agents, MLOps, eval, safety | Deep-learning core only, by design |
| Practice & feedbackVideos are input; retention comes from output. Only one of us provides the output side. | Quizzes, runnable code blocks, and trade-offs per topic | Reproduce-the-repo self-study; no exercises built in |
| Interview preparationKnowing nanoGPT deeply is impressive; stating retrieval-vs-fine-tune trade-offs in 3 minutes is what the round needs. | Interview tips and rehearsed trade-offs across the whole curriculum | None — lectures only |
| ReferenceabilityRevisiting "attention math" before a loop: a page beats scrubbing a 2-hour video. | Every topic is a page you can search, link, and skim in minutes | Multi-hour videos; chapters help but skimming is hard |
| PriceWe list this so the comparison stays honest: on price, he wins. | Free Phase 1, then one-time-payment options (/ai-ml/pricing) | 100% free on YouTube |
Choose Karpathy's Zero to Hero if...
- You want to understand backprop and GPTs at the code level from the best teacher doing it.
- You learn by watching experts build and then reproducing it yourself.
- Your Python/NumPy is already comfortable and your budget is zero.
Choose AI & ML: Beginner to Pro if...
- You need everything around the DL core: 320 topics spanning classical ML through serving, eval, and alignment.
- You need practice artifacts — per-topic quizzes, trade-offs, interview tips — a video series structurally cannot have.
- You want the mechanisms also explained in written, diagrammed, searchable form you can revisit before an interview.
- You are newer than "can already read NumPy fluently" and need the earlier rungs.
The honest verdict
Karpathy is a treasure and we send people to him on purpose: watch Zero to Hero to feel backprop in your bones, then come back for the rest of the map. His series is a deep, narrow, free masterclass; ours is the wide, sequenced, practice-bearing curriculum with interviews in mind. Anyone who tells you to choose only one is selling something.
Karpathy's Zero to Hero questions, answered straight
Is Karpathy enough to learn machine learning?+
For the deep-learning core, it is possibly the best free material anywhere. For ML as jobs know it — data pipelines, classical baselines, retrieval, eval, deployment, monitoring — his series deliberately does not go there, and you will need a wider spine. Plenty of engineers pair his videos with a structured curriculum; that pairing is our standard advice.
Should a beginner start with Zero to Hero?+
Not cold. The series assumes you are already fluent in Python and comfortable with NumPy, and it starts near the mechanics rather than the foundations. Beginners do better with an ordered curriculum (our free Phase 1, or any solid intro) and then graduate to Karpathy when backprop stops being magic.
What does your course add over his videos?+
Structure and artifacts: 320 sequenced topics, per-topic quizzes, explicit trade-offs, interview tips, runnable code blocks, and the production phases (serving, eval, drift, alignment) his series never claimed to cover. What we do not add is his charisma — watch him for that, it is free.
